| Amtrak strike could cripple commuter rail service
Suburban commuters stranded from Virginia to Massachusetts. Train service shut down at New Yorks Pennsylvania Station and Chicagos Union Station. A flood of extra cars on already congested highways around Washington and San Francisco. Come Jan. 30, that nightmare could be a reality unless a long-standing labor dispute between Amtrak and nine unions is resolved. There has never been a strike in Amtraks 36-year history, and its still likely that one will be averted, either through a last-minute deal or intervention by Congress. Here's how commuter rail services would be affected by an Amtrak strike: NEW JERSEY TRANSIT About 218,000 trips per day are taken on trains that travel at least partly on tracks owned by Amtrak. Illinois gunman's deadly rampage baffles many who knew him; police had ...
If there is such a thing as a profile of a mass murderer, Steven Kazmierczak didn't fit it: outstanding student, engaging, polite and industrious, with what looked like a bright future in the criminal justice field. And yet on Thursday, the 27-year-old Kazmierczak, who had ties to Florida, armed himself with three handguns and a brand-new pump-action shotgun he had carried onto campus in a guitar case. He stepped from behind a screen on the stage of a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University and opened fire on a geology class, killing five students before committing suicide. University Police Chief Donald Grady said, without giving details, that Kazmierczak had become erratic in the past two weeks after he had stopped taking his medication. But that seemed to come as news to many of those who knew him, and the attack itself was positively baffling.
Ski Sunday takes stock (99)
As someone who has watched this programme since it first began I can only think that those who have complained simply enjoy doing so. It is after all easy to be critical. To be creative takes talent. The one aspect which you might want to consider altering is the celebrity challenge part. I know that since Noel Edmonds show's fatal accident the Beeb is not keen at all to have members of the public invovled but would it not be better to have them racing against the clock and benefiting from Mr Bell's expertise? I await your call!! D W Jaap .
