Gareth, who was raised in a family of six in Battersea, south London, "went off the rails" after his father died when he was 10. He was finally released from borstal in 1984 when he was 18, but by then he had developed a taste for heroin. Within six days of his release, he was back in custody for theft. "I didn't know what else to do apart from steal and smoke heroin," he says. Now, more than two decades later, Gareth is still using heroin in British institutions albeit in more controversial circumstances. Gareth is one of just 20 people who, instead of taking oral methadone, are being treated with government-funded pharmaceutical heroin (diamorphine) in a groundbreaking experiment to move entrenched heroin users away from dealers and crime. Now, at the age of 41, with more than two-thirds of his life spent on heroin, Gareth looks fitter than the average London cabbie.
Budweiser, Miller…and Tsingtao?
Crown Imports, the largest beer importer in the U.S., sells more Tsingtao beer every year during Chinese New Year than any other period. This year, it's been pulling out all the stops. Chicago-based Crown (a subsidiary of Constellation Brands (STZ)) has persuaded Costco Wholesale (COST) to carry China's most famous beer in several stores in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest on a trial basis during celebrations of the Year of the Rat, which started on Feb. 7. If Tsingtao sells well, Costco may consider stocking the Chinese import beer year-round. Crown Imports has also signed up celebrity chef Martin Yan to kick off a marketing blitz in a bid to expand Tsingtao outside Chinatown and into downtown U.S.A. Tsingtao is China's oldest and most famous beer, with a 13% market share at home.
For Kristi Yamaguchi, show is a delicate dance
RALEIGH, N.C. Things are about to get mighty hectic in Raleigh's relatively tranquil Hedican-Yamaguchi household. Dad Bret Hedican is looking to help his Carolina Hurricanes get to the Stanley Cup playoffs. Mom Kristi Yamaguchi is hoping to tango to victory on television's "Dancing With the Stars." And daughters Keara Kiyomi, 4, and Emma Yoshiko, 2, are about to have their routines disrupted. "I'm a little anxious now," said Yamaguchi, the gold medal-winning figure skater, who was announced last week as a contestant on the ABC show's sixth season. "It's a whole different world." She's a fan of the program, in which celebrities are paired with professionals to perform ballroom dances. One couple is voted off each week, based on judges' scores and viewers' votes.
