Biotechnology Industry Seeks Passage Of Bill To Allow FDA Approval Of ...

The biotechnology industry, which for years has opposed bills that would allow FDA to approve generic versions of biotech medications, has made such legislation a priority for 2008, the AP/Raleigh News & Observer reports. Several bills currently under consideration in Congress would allow FDA to approve generic versions of biotech medications, and the Bush administration supports such legislation. According to the AP/News & Observer, the biotech "industry's shift comes as election-year politics are expected to shift Washington away from biotech's interests," and faced with the possibility that Democrats will "gain more power in Congress this November, which could tilt favor to the generic drug industry," the "biotech industry wants an agreement as soon as possible."

Biotech Industry Organization President Jim Greenwood said, "We've made good progress in having this issue understood by the people who are in place on Capitol Hill now," and "we'd like to get it done this year so we don't have to start all over again" (AP/Raleigh News & Observer, 2/15).

Showing her true colours

Nine studio albums later she is still touring, most recently alongside artists including Debbie Harry, the Dresden Dolls, Rufus Wainwright and the Gossip, for the True Colours tour of the US, a human rights tour which she organised.

A strong supporter of gay rights (her sister is a lesbian), Lauper will perform at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardis Gras this year, as well as doing her own shows. There's also a new CD in the pipeline – her first collection of new music since 2003's Shine, which "never even made it out of the box", because it was released only in Japan.

"I'm under the crunch to get it done," Lauper says of her new, as yet unnamed, CD.

"I worked with people from all over the world, which kind of makes it a little more interesting, but harder to get everything together.

A blog about technology from BBC News

First, the good news: Sony's games division has made the first profit in two years.

Here's the bad news: Sony is cutting its sales goal for PS3 to 9.5 million units for the year from 11 million.

So is PS3 succeeding or not?

It depends on how you measure it. In comparison to the Wii, the PlayStation is a failure for Sony. Wii sales are stronger, faster and despite predictions of being short-lived, show staying power.

But compared to 360 sales, it may be good news for Sony. Xbox 360 sales are slowing - and worryingly for Microsoft they are slowing during a period of arguably its greatest games line-up.

So what does 2008 hold?

I don't believe titles like Haze or Metal Gear Solid 4 will shift that many more PS3s.
