| Victory instills confidence for push to a playoff berth
The California Cougars, fresh off their first victory in seven weeks, have reached a critical point in the season. The Cougars (8-11) still are in the Major Indoor Soccer League's playoff race after Friday's 9-8 victory over Chicago at Stockton Arena. A tough two-game trip awaits them this week - a visit to New Jersey (10-10) at 8 a.m. Thursday and Philadelphia (10-13) at 4:05 p.m. Saturday. "There's always a make-or-break situation for teams, and this might be one of those," coach Bernie Lilavois said. "We're playing everyone in front of us, so we can beat them and catch up. This is the one where we have to make our move." California goalie Sanaldo was outstanding against Chicago, and he was named the league's goalkeeper of the week on Tuesday. Sanaldo's 20 saves kept the Cougars in the playoff race, with New Jersey 11/2 games ahead of them for the fifth playoff spot and Monterrey (9-11) up by a half-game in the final spot.
Web services slash CO2 emissions
The savings come through a reduced need for people to travel to council offices to make enquiries or submit paperwork, or for staff to move between locations. If the figure is scaled up for the rest of the country, it would mean a reduction in CO2 emissions of 14,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to 5,362 return flights from Heathrow to Malaga in Spain. The research is based on data supplied by Sunderland City Council relating to web services for planning, schools admission, registrars' certificates, environmental service enquiries and council tax payments. In addition, the reduction in CO2 due to the web services is significantly higher than the extra CO2 generated by the increased server requirements. Parmjit Dhanda, minister for e-government, said people should be encouraged to talk to their local authority via the web due to these benefits.
Piling it on: Local snow totals
In somewhat of an unusual turnabout from previous storms this season, communities south of Detroit and closer to the Ohio border took a heavier hit while communities north of Detroit had far less. In the right-hand column, you'll find snowfall totals in inches for select southeast Michigan cities as of noon today. .
